Keeping a home in the Eichler style brings the Fall issue's historical voyage fully into the present—as Dave Weinstein's insightful piece about a hot design topic of 2018, 'Dwellification,' examines the influence of that popular magazine brand on California's modern design integrity.

The most colorful feature of the magazine, however, is definitely our profile of abstract painter and paper-cutout artist Fernando Reyes entitled 'Destiny's Calling.' The Oakland resident first explored figurative drawing, but his oeuvre was forever altered by a visit to a Henri Matisse exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

"Matisse had immense paper cutout blue nudes," he recalls. "That's what changed everything for me."

"Fernando has developed a style that is often completely abstract, with multi-colored forms that range from angular to curvaceous and seem to dance," our story points out in this lavishly illustrated feature on the onetime San Francisco banker. "The collages are complex in look, conception, and material."

"I like the precision of his work, even his freeform figurative drawings. There's a lot of precision in his line. You don't see that in a lot of people," says Jeff Haass, one of several collectors brought into the story. "His abstracts, I can just look at them forever, trying to see all the pieces and how they fit together."

So there you have it. If you're feeling somewhat forlorn or cast away by summer's sun setting, fear not. From modern homes to modern art, the Fall '18 issue of CA-Modern may be just the rescue vessel you seek. Here's a flip-book version of the issue.
