Hot off the press—new Home Maintenance Directory's protection from project pitfalls
Fridays on the Homefront

"Most work done on or through Eichler roofs…is done wrong or poorly by professionals without many years of trial-and-error experience on Eichlers," warns Feriante. For example, he says, "The electrical wiring between the visible ceiling boards and roof membrane—and in and under the concrete slab—is totally foreign to non-Eichler experienced professionals."

Rick Abril, another longtime foam roofer profiled in the directory, agrees completely with his colleague.

"Eichler roofs are unique in that a lot of them have copper water lines, gas lines, [and] electrical lines on the roof," says the co-owner of Abril Roofing. "Experienced Eichler roofers know how to deal with all those intricacies."

"Several of our companies have been with us for two decades or more, building a reputation year in and year out," Arbunich notes. "Homeowners get our word that if any of our companies do not perform professionally or do not respond adequately to a performance issue, we will step in to explore that homeowner's issue."

"It's a rarity when we get a complaint about one of our companies," the publisher stated with confidence, "but when we do, 99 percent of the time that complaint is brought to conclusion to the satisfaction of the homeowner."

And with Eichlers, it's frequently not just the individual homeowner who needs satisfying. Neighbors get concerned about major changes to a home in an Eichler tract, notes Abril, adding, "There's a lot more community involvement in their home."

"Owners of other home types often are not aware of the style of their home at all, and don't seem to care as much about consistency with the style," says Klopf, in contrast with Eichler owners and specialists. "Architects and designers who work on other styles will default to design approaches more fitting to the other styles. A person who works on Eichler home designs will design in a MCM-appropriate style naturally."

So naturally, when you venture into that sometimes-scary place where home improvement resides, don't forget to consult the Eichler Network Directory—as important as mosquito netting in the jungle if you don't want to get bit.
