An amoeba-shaped window is cut specifically to showcase Crystal Springs Reservoir but conceal the freeway. A sunken conversation pit in the living room helps accentuate the Stone-Age feel with circular seating. Artist Dan Das Mann of Burning Man fame was enlisted to add a textural contrast in the form of a steel front door with rectangular coils protruding from it.

"This Bay Area treasure is truly a world-class work of art," effused listing agent Judy Meuschke in a press release issued by Saratoga-based Alain Pinel Realtors. "This is an amazing opportunity for any buyer who can appreciate the artistry of the architecture and design."

That's emphasis on "buyer," as there will be no open houses for the $4.2 million listing and showings only for serious home shoppers.

Three bedrooms and two baths are included in the approximately 2,700 square feet. Its remarkable construction method didn't exactly catch fire, and it has not been universally loved by neighbors in Hillsborough. After all, this tony Peninsula community is no Bedrock. The house remains, however, Nicholson's most famous work by far.

"Nestled into the hillside overlooking Crystal Springs Reservoir, the exceptional residence has been admired by tourists and travelers alike," boasts Pinel's release.

Meuschke was quoted last week as never having had a property draw so much attention so quickly. If one had to guess, a buyer for this colorful, cartoonish oddity will materialize soon—leaving poor old Fred locked out again when he gets home from the quarry. Wilma!
