Balcony/Deck and Railing Repair

We have a CA modern built in 1962 with a cantilevered deck along the entire back of the house overlooking a canyon. The decking and railing are all original. Unfortunately the decking and probably the cantilevered joists are in poor condition. The original railing is downright scary from a safety standpoint as it has very large openings that a child or pet can easily fall through. Questions: 1. I have been trying to research alternate, yet period appropriate, railings with little luck. We prefer a system that will keep the view open looking down into the canyon. 2. Suggestions for replacement decking? The original is painted wood. Someone suggested redwood decking but that doesn't seem period appropriate (or is it)? Thanks.
