Color staining mahogany panels questions

We have a wall that, after 52 years of having shelving, has shadows now that we removed the shelves. We are planning on washing and lightly sanding the area as the EichlerNetwork's maintainance tips suggest. 

After that, we are thinking of staining (not painting) the wall with a color hue. Does anyone have firsthand recomendations of stains or colors that work well and that we should avoid? It it possible to share a few photos?

We saw this on a website recently but are hoping other owners have tried this so we don't have to find out the hard way!
