Door handle polish?

I'm a new owner in the Fallen Leaf neighborhood of Los Altos.  What is the preferred and safe way to remove oxidation from the original silver door handles and ring of metal?  A recommendation for the solution and tools of the trade would be great.  I'm not even sure what type of metal these are (Aluminum?) so any information would be appreciated.
