Can anyone recommend someone who can design and/or build MCM-compliant fences and gates? Or anyone I can contact who might be able to offer a recommendation? Thanks.

A would think any good fence builder could do an MCM style fence. I dont think there's anything especially challenging about the construction, more just knowing the style.

There are several MCM garden design books floating around on eBay, some with detailed fence designs, so you could find a style you like that way.

Then look for a good fence builder at Consumers Checkbook (a good general bay area resource) and get a quote.

Good luck!

Electronics means "multi chip module" and also used in machining, but I've not heard it in reference to a fence.

I took a picture of a fence in the neighborhood that I liked and showed it to the contractors when they came to bid on the project. All of them seemed able to execute the design. I chose the contractor which seemed to get the concept the best. You do not have to have someone who speciaizes in MCM fences to do this work.

There's design and then there is execution. I strongly recommend the following when executing a design:

- have them quote for footings using brackets (not the pour, water, stir method of post stetting). It costs a bit more but will lengthen the lifetime of the fence significantly.

- use treated lumber to retain the soil away from the bottom board of the fence.

Both my side fence and the back fence were installed using the conventional "pour, water, stir" method of post setting. The side fence had to be replaced at 7 years due to the posts having rotted at the ground level. We replaced it with the bracket method 5 years ago and it is still holding strong.

The back fence gave way during the recent rainy season at only 5 years of age. Again we replaced it with the bracket method and retaining method.

The other side fence was replaced 5 years back with bracket and is still going strong.

My non-scientific estimate is that bracket installations may cost 25% more for installation (an extra day for the brackets to set) but will last 50-100% longer. You can tighten the posts periodically if needed and if you do end up replacing a post, you don't have to dig the footing out. Just replace the post above ground.

Cheers.
