Fireplace damper

Has anyone had a damper installed on their fireplace? We seem to be losing a lot of heat that way and I was hoping we could get something installed before it really gets cold. I found some interesting products online (mostly top mount dampers) but if anyone has any first hand experience I would appreciate the input.

There should be one already in there. Most likely frozen and might not be able to save it.

There are many after market products that have a flap on top of the exhaust end with pull chain to open/close it.

A lot depends on what you plan to do with the fireplace.

If you will never use, just any type of covering will do. Semi permanent to permanent.

My fireplace has a wood pellet furnance and the chimmey exhaust has a 1/4" thick aluminum plate with two holes. One is the furance exhaust and the other is the furnance intake. Both about 4 inches in dia. That plate is bedded in cement to the original flue & top capper.

Another approach is a fireplace opening glass door.

So I looked up there with a flashlight, and sure enough there is one and it works perfectly. So that's one problem solved.

Now, does anyone know a source for modern fireplace screens or doors?

Design Within Reach has 3 different styles of screens. Varying from an stainless to glass. You can view all 3 here:
