Can anyone suggest an interior designer for us? We are thinking of re-doing our baths and kitchen. We live in San Jose, so someone in this area, if at all possible would be best. Please e-mail directly with your recommendations. Thanks

Sue Olsen does wonderful work and would be one of my top choices. We are getting ready to remodel our master bath and had thought of using an interior designer, like Sue, for this. However, hubby makes the point--and I think it is a good one--that for us, it many not make sense. This is for two reasons:

1) We are not moving anything...fixtures, walls and windows will stay where they are. Thus a designer may get frustrated and feel under-challenged. This is a little tiny space without much room for imagination, unless we were going to make major changes. The point here is that sometimes, to really take advantage of a designer and the value they add to the process, you need to be able to give them some leeway to move things around, especially in light of the tiny space we are talking about.

2) I have a good idea what I want the space to look like in terms of color and materials. Hubby is convinced that there is a strong liklihood that we would end up wasting a designer's time getting their input, and then end up doing what we were originally planning anyway. He won this argument, so we are doing this on our own.

The other option is to work with a contractor that has some design experience and understands Eichlers. If you can get a general idea about what you want to do and then work with such a person, drawing on their experience, you can come up with some nice solutions. We are working with Ron Key Construction for the master bath and he and his project manager, Murphy, have made some excellent suggestions.
