we are trying to replace the original thermador oven but am having difficulty as it is only 23 inches wide, any suggestions? We would like the same width so it will fit into the preexisting cabinet,

I think you will find what they call a "24 inch" will fit. Depending on what color you need, some of the standard brands still carry this size. When I was looking I needed a stainless steel color so would have had to go with the expensive European brands (Miele, etc.). However, had I needed white or black, domestic brands were available in that size.

You don't say where you are located, but I recommend visiting an appliance-only store such as University Electric in the South Bay. This will get you salespeople who can help you track down who is offering the size you need and in what colors.

Cheers.

Ditto to Jake's comments.

We replaced ours several years ago with Kitchen Aid Superba convection/double wall oven. It was 24 inches wide and fit in the space just fine. The only other choice at the time, was Miele and to get a double oven would have meant to buy two Miele's at about $3K a pop.

We also used University Electric in Santa Clara (for this and all of our appliances) and Jake is right -- the sales staff are long term EES that are trained and knowledgable. They are not paid commission. The buying experience was excellent. On the weekends, they sometimes have cooking demos, which can also be helpful.

Lastly, you may want to try posting an inquiry about who makes good 24" wall ovens today over at the appliance forum at http://www.thathomesite.com. Great place to go for additional information.

We're in an Eichler in which the cooktop has been removed as well as the oven. There is a free-standing combo sitting at the end of the countertop.

We'd like to try to find a cooktop and a suitable built-in oven. Haven't seen much dicussion on whether it's worthwhile to try to find original Thermador cooktop/oven, or if you're better off just getting the new appliances (I would assume the latter).

Also any feedback on specific brands of ovens/cooktops regarding quality, reliability, or service?

Thanks.
