Palo Alto Eichler and Mackey homes off Louis...

Hello ENers,

One of my friends just moved to Palo Alto right off Louis. She said that she had cement slab foundation with working radiant heat in the floor. "Oh, an Eichler?" "No, it's a modified Mackey." wa-wa-what? The Mackey homes I'm familiar with have a crawl space, forced air heating, and drywall everywhere.

I don't want to call my friend a liar... but... are there "modified Mackeys" that have cement slab foundation with radiant heat? Is my friend right or wrong?

Really curious.

Thank you.

Yes- your friend is right (but what is a "modified Mackey"?). I couldn't believe it either but there is one that I know of on Stelling (off Louis) that had Radiant heat but Stainless Steel pipes. It was a rental and the radiant heat was barely hanging on. The owners recently restored it and abandon the old piping and installed another radiant heat flooring system over the existing slab. They had a very reputable Eichler Radiant Heat specialist install it.

How was it determined to be a Mackey--was it by positive identification (for instance, the original building permit) or process of elimination (couldn't be an Eichler because...)? Just curious, I don't know much about Mackeys.

Jake- I can't be sure it's an official Mackey but I will ask. I know it has the characteristic of a Mackey and it has the exact same layout as the other Mackey's in the neighborhood (big brick fireplace right in the middle of the house) except a slab instead of crawl space.

I'm well familiar with that Mackey. It's near the Frank Lloyd Wright tract... you know, those two story canelevered ones?

I lived in a Mackey in Mountain View before buying my Eichler in Saratoga. It was in the Monta loma Nighborhhood which consists of Eichlers, Mackeys, and Mardels (built up in 1955). My Mackey had the big glass floor to ceiling windows, tar and gravel low sloped roof, open beam ceiling, and concrete slab. It was called the "Honeymoon" model at a whopping 1104 square feet. It fits your description but had gas wall heaters instead of radiant heating. Does your friend's place have horizontal sliding garage doors? This distiguished the Eichlers in my old nighborhood.
