This is our first winter in our 'new' Fairgrove Eichler, and I'm looking for advice on how the heating system works.
First, how do I turn off heat to parts of the house we don't normally use? The mainfold (where the water comes from the heater in to the house & all the feed lines, in our closet in the hall) has a screw and a nut for each pipe... do I turn the screw so the head's perpendicular to the flow (like the gas main valve) to turn off the water, or do I have to turn the screw in until it 'seats' to turn off the flow to a section of the heating? As you can probably tell, I haven't messed with it yet.
Also, it seems like the boiler runs constantly. When I feel the manifold it's never very hot. Is that normal? We had the system hydrostatically tested before we bought the house, but I'm wondering if the boiler may be kaput or if the circulating pump may be bad.
Hello,
I moved in to our Eichler just about one month ago. The boiler seemed to be on all the time. I had it inspected. ..The pilot light was on. When it was inspected the fellow Mike told me that over time the small hole gets bigger, which makes for a larger pilot flame. When the boiler was turned on and fired up the top of the boiler got very hot. The heat exchanger was clogged. So in a nut shell you may want to have your boiler inspected.
