Shade Trees

One of the first things we did during the spring of our first year in our Sunnyvale Eichler was to cut down all of the Privets that lined the west side of our house. We have always planned on planting shade trees that were less messy. Yesterday's heat has reminded me to stop putting it off.

So, I'm looking for referrals for someone who can help me walk through the tree selection process and then actually perform the work. The work would also include some light cement removal and a tree removal.

Please send me an email at [email protected].

I love the two types of tree's right in front of the entrance to the Sunnyvale permit office. I know one is Japanese Maple. I'm not sure of the name to the other however.

Be aware that the Japanese Maple grows extremely slow for a shade tree. We happen to have a prime example in our front yard but that one took probably 50 years to grow.

Be also beware of the Sycamores - these are popular because they grow fast and are beautiful shade trees, but they become HUGE and they are also messy due to the Anthracnose they contract in the California climate

See if Sunnyvale has a City Arborist. He can recommend trees that will suit you. Several years ago, at our office in Menlo Park, the City trees along the street, started expiring of old age. We have been here for 25 plus years and have noticed lots of old trees expiring on our street. The City Arborist gave us what they thought was the best trees for the situation. They told us to water them with 5 gallons a week for a year. This was not enough water in hot weather. A couple of years, some of the new top growth was burned in hot weather. I'm glad that I did not pick the trees, but had a good informed source.
