Stripping Painted Beams

Anyone here have any experience stripping their beams? The beams in my home were painted a god-awful color, and I'm assuming there are more layers underneath. I don't even know where to start. It seems like it will be a tedious project, but I'd love to hear some insight (or pictures of results) if you've removed paint from your beams and either restained or left them with a natural wood look!

Thanks!

This person had very good luck with the Paintshaver. You can see the results here:

You will also need a detail sander for the corners and a belt sander for smoothing the larger areas.

Start on the beams you care to see the least so you get practice for the ones in you living space.

We used PeelAway 7 to strip the ceilings. It was pretty tedious, but beams present a lot less surface area. The beams are Douglas fir, I believe. There is one house in our neighborhood with stripped and clear coated beams, but they still have a painted ceiling. It looks nice (but I like my stripped and stained ceiling better! )
