We also chatted with residents of Terra Linda, in San Rafael, where one particular neighbor's haunted Halloween street scene still draws local crowds to her Eichler each year.

"The heyday of MGM Studios is what it [my neighborhood] looks like today, with hundreds of people blocking the street," says Denise Albertini, a Terra Linda local in love with all the Halloween hubbub.

Gift-giving is never far from our thoughts during the holidays, so you'll want to head over to our 'That's Entertainment' section. There, CA-Modern features editor Dave Weinstein offers recommendations for living your best mid-century modern lifestyle with the latest in books, movies, and music.

One of the most exciting new book releases is Star Trek: Designing the Final Frontier by Dan Chavkin and Brian McGuire. "Episode after episode featured exciting mid-century modern design," Weinstein explains. "From Capt. Kirk's seat on the bridge to Eero Saarinen-inspired tulip chairs, to Milo Baughman's swirl-rocker club chair to an Architectural Pottery planter designed by John Follis."

'That Golden Glow': 70 years later, looking back at McDonald's iconic golden arches.

Another fascinating read in the Fall issue is 'Sins of Suburbia,' a refresh of a fascinating 'CA-Modernist' blog story penned by Dave Weinstein that delves into "the effects we feel today from sprawl, isolation, and unaffordable housing." Some might say that the antidote to some of these issues is in building more housing, which dovetails into our next hot topic from the Fall issue under the 'Modern Renewal' heading.

For that story, 'It Came from the Backyard,' Weinstein gives an even hand in reviewing the current concerns and benefits of backyard ADUs, also known as 'accessory dwelling units.'

Studying California's new state laws, and the potential impact on Eichler tracts, the feature asks the question, "With more ADUs on the way, what lies ahead for the character and livability of mid-century modern neighborhoods?"

The article is a smart overview of the pros and cons of building ADUs, and interviews Bay Area architects John Klopf and Curt Cline, who weigh in with tips on designing and building a successful ADU.

For the issue's 'CA-Modern Flashback,' join us for 'That Golden Glow,' as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of McDonald's golden arches, and look into the origins of how these American icons came to be.

You'll meet McDonald's founding duo, McDonald brothers Richard and Maurice, architects Stanley Meston and Charles Fish, and second owner Ray Kroc—all key figures in the McDonald's legacy.

'Caressing Spirit': jeweler Art Smith and his mid-century art that moved with the body. Photo: courtesy the Estate of Art Smith

Modernist Art Smith is a name you'll want to remember, and Weinstein tells his heartfelt Fall issue story in 'Caressing Spirit,' our 'Art About the House' entry. Smith "designed his mid-century jewelry to move with the body—like jazz," Weinstein explains. And it doesn't get any better than that.

Smith, who referred to his dramatic mid-century creations as "modern hand-wrought jewelry," worked out of a small studio he operated in New York's Greenwich Village, a beloved place he called 'Little Bauhaus.' Don't miss this one. You'll be wowed by the man—and the marvelous story and photos too.
