Crystal

A family tradition that began in 1947, in the garage of cabinetmaker Tom Hammer, has evolved into one of the largest custom cabinet manufacturers in the United States.

Based in Princeton, Minn., Crystal Cabinets offers semi-custom cabinetry and millwork across a broad selection of door styles, wood species, and colors that allow homeowners to customize the look of their kitchen to the style of their space.

The company offers many green products made of Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood choices and environmentally friendly product materials that have low-VOC water-based finishes.

Crystal's 12 slab door styles are a good choice for MCM design, and they come in a range of materials and finishes, including any paint color from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams.

There are plenty of storage options for the base cabinets, including spice drawers, drawer dividers, built-in knife blocks, and pot and plate organizers. Wall cabinets include options for cubbies, pullouts for narrow spaces, tray dividers, and tall pantry storage. crystalcabinets.com

DeWils

DeWils' more contemporary cabinetry collections focus on simple, clean lines, and smooth surfaces, making them a good fit for modern homes.

That beauty isn't just skin deep, either. For more than 50 years Dewils has built a reputation for making semi-custom cabinetry with a focus on quality craftsmanship.

The cases are constructed of sturdy plywood, and joints are pneumatically fastened and additionally secured with industrial adhesive. The fully adjustable shelving is made of 3/4-inch plywood for increased strength so they won't bow or bend under the weight of everything stashed in them. Drawers are built of solid wood with dovetail joints and feature smooth, full-extension glides that are self closing.

Door fronts come in a choice of materials, including sustainable hardwoods that are hand sanded; engineered wood; Thermofoil, which uses a PVC outer layer; and textured laminates.

Finishes include hand-rubbed and custom stains, glazes, paint, and distressing. Six-way adjustable hinges on the doors make it simple to adjust the doors to open and close just right. dewils.com
