Lighting Suggestions for MBR Closet?

Hello ENers,

I am pretty close to redoing my closet. Two doors that open out.

Does any have any suggestions on how to install lights inside my closet? I prefer hardwired; so where do people put the switch? Not trying to do a lot of wood penetration (I still have Philippine Mahogany paneling from 1954).

Does anyone have suggestions on what to do or what not to do?

Thank you.

Hi David:

How's it going? It's been awhile since we last corresponded. We had low voltage halogen lights installed throughout the house and one set of them runs the width of the MBR, parallel and just in front of the closet doors. The fixtures are inexpensive Hampton Bay ones that can be twisted and turned to any angle. They are very bright and I have them aimed directly into the closet.

For an inexpensive, non- hardwired solution you might try the IKEA catalog. I have seen some "fixtures" that look like tracks but plug into an outlet. Of course, you'd have to put an outlet in your closet first. Another problem. [we already had outlets put in our closet on a whim, for recharging the cell phones and iPods.]

Good luck! Hope all is well with your projects.

Hello Cathye,

Long time. No hear. The outside painting went really well. I agonize for remodeling projects and then when it's done I'm proud of it.

I had the driveway redone. I had it dyed a taupe color, but it looks more grey.

On the lights, an electrician came over last week and we talked about low voltage lights in the LR and the MBR. For the closet, I have two options: a) put flouriscent (sp) in the closet (any other light is against code) or b) track lighting outside the closet pointing in. I LOVE your idea of putting an outlet in the closet. What a great idea.

Without your help, my home would be not be as great as it is turning out.

Because your insight, I have automatic garage doors, Blomberg sliding doors in my bedroom (ceiling high door in LR to follow); three tone exterior painting; and soon..... tract lighting.

Oh.... back to my closet, a contractor is coming tomorrow to redo my closet. I found this home theater bookcase at Scandinavian Designs on clearance that fits perfectly within the recess of the closet -- perfect for shoes -- and then he's going to install two hanger rods. I hope there's room for a shelf, but the rods are going to be 42" and then 84" and that doesn't leave much room for a shelf; but we'll see. So, with a flourescent (sp) light inside, I hope it will backlight the clothes.

So, the electrician thought of putting in two or three switches by the entrance to the MBR -- one for the closet, one for in front of the closet and one for the bedroom itself. Hey.... I like that..... He said he could install everything with very little penetration (still have mahogany paneling). I may have him install an outlet in the closet, too -- thank you for your suggestion, Cathye.

I will keep you informed.

David
