The original sliding closet doors in our Eichler have been removed and replaced with ugly mirrored sliders. We are looking for five sets of original closet doors or for someone to make them in the original grass-cloth covered style. If you know of any source for these doors, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks very much.
You may be able to make closet doors that match your original one. I think Leslie Fitch who frequents this board knows of a source who carries the grass cloth in the Bay Area, or online. From there, paste it up on some sheets on 1/2 inch plywood, attach the shoji frame, made of wood strips, drill and place the finger hole hardware, and wall-lah: shoji-Eichler closet doors. If you don't have original doors else where in you house, consult your friendly neighbor, or Eichler book.
You can also use the search function of the site/board to locate the thread which mentions the source for the grass cloth.
Good luck.
The wallpaper can be bought online at the site below. I spent a whole day browsing through various catalogs and comparing the samples with the original grasscloth that was left in my house. This one is an almost perfect match to the original:
What kind of glue or adhesive did you use to attach the grass cloth to the doors? Thanks.
There was a glue recommended on the rolls - I do not exactly remember what it was called
I have just repaired four closet doors with the original burlap covering that you can get at Home Depot along with the glue. I have lots of glue left over. I can help anyone with it or give instruction on how to do it.
