We have the orginal sliding screen and patio doors. Ours have several layers of paint which I just started to remove. What was the original finish on these doors?

Where they painted to match the trim? Or left natural polished steel?

I am also missing the inside and outside handle for one screen door, does anyone have a old handle available?

Hi,

You don't say where you live but your request for sliding door parts will probably be more effective if you do. The reason is that the sliding doors can vary from tract to tract. For instance, at least some of the Palo Alto Eichlers have steel doors whereas my San Jose (Willow Glen) Eichler has aluminum. Door handles also varied--mine are different than those in Cupertino. I think your best bet is a neighbour so post where you're from and maybe a neighbour will be able to help you out with the hardware.

I think most of the sliding screen doors were made by Arcadia who still produce sliding doors. However, they have only a limited supply of currently manufactured parts that can be used on the old styles. You won't find any of the original doorhandles through them but you might find other bits (like rollers). All of the Eichler sliding doors I've seen were coated aluminum or coated steel. On my doors, both chemical paint removers and scraping removed this finish. Early on, I tried just respraying them with a metallic spray. I don't think it is very wear-resistant though.

I did find a spray I'm planning to try on the next sliding window I do--Rust-oleum "Cold Galvanizing Compound" . The label says it's for "recoating of galvanized steel, sheet metal and fences". Maybe someone who knows more about this than I do can comment on whether that sounds like a good idea or I'm on the wrong trak.

The doors are steel and manufactured by Arcadia, I live in the Rancho San Miguel development in Walnut Creek.

Thanks for the info so far.

Jeff,
The San Miguel homes had a great Brass handle on the Doors.
Have not seen any for awhile and I had new doors in my RSM
Home installed by Noise Solutions 3 years ago.
Love the Sliders, but miss the old handles.
Can't have evrything.
Try a post on our website and see if you can get
something from a neighbor. I know some people who are
going to get all new doors and maybe you can score from them.
Good Luck
