sliding glass door repair

I have three sliding glass doors that are out of alignment and won't lock. Is there a way to repair the locks rather than replacing the entire door? I've been told there are no repair parts and that replacement, which is very costly, is the only alternative.

If service company recommendations, send directly to lauralf AT aol.com

Thanks for any help...

Here are some suggestions:

- Seems to me there is a leveling screw on the bottom of the door. If it is a vertical alignment you need, this might do the trick. (Someone more familiar with this could comment.)

- If you have a local sliding door company, I'd recommend having them come out for a "tuneup". They should be able to make whatever adjustments are necessary. I know there's a long time screen and glass door company in Cupertino that used to do this . Though I will say their customer service for out-of-town Eichler ownes has gone decidedly downhill since I first used them 3 or 4 years back. Still, worth a try.

- There is also a chap listed under "siding-glass doors" here on the website

http://www.eichlernetwork.com/ENServ.html

and in the 2006 Eichler Network Home Maintenance booklet (p. 9). He's been doing slding door repair and other general handyman things for a while now. Not cheap but a neighbor has used him to fix his sliding door locks and was very pleased with the results.

Good luck.

Laura,

As Jake mentioned there is an advertiser on the EN website that specializes in sliding door repairs. You can also check local 'glass' shops - there is one in Palo Alto near San Antonio and Central. Jake also mentioned another glass shop in Cupertino - I used them to get replacement screen doors for all of our sliding doors.

From what I've read you'll find varying degrees of help/success with replacing 'parts' (including locks) on the doors. Someone suggested to remove your lock/part or whatever you're trying to replace and taking it with you to one of these stores - you save on paying the premium for someone to come out on a service call.

Many Eichlers were built with doors manufactured by Arcadia - and this company does still exist and you can order some replacement parts (but they have stopped making many of the parts from 'older' doors). Do a web search for Arcadia Products and see what you find...

You can also do a search on the EN site for sliding doors and see other posts...

we had glass repaired on one of our Arcadia sliders a couple years back and somehow in the process the locking mechanism had to be replaced (not a key lock but the latching bit).

The glass guy came out to do the replacement on site, and he had the latch parts in his truck. So, unless your doors are unique or otherwise very different, there is hope.

I have followed the advice on this forum to replace 3 Arcadia sliding glass door handles on a home I am working on. I went to Franciscian glass- the glass company on the corner of San Antonio and Central in Mountain View, CA and they seemed helpful. They can come out and replace the handles but I need to first order the handles.

The existing handles have varioius missing pieces or locking mechanisms but they are all Aluminum like the doors. Replacement handles on the internet and at the glass co. are either white (not acceptable) or black (might work). Most have a wood handle or wood colored tape decoration. They dont' exactly match the look of the door.

Does anyone have a replacement handle recommendation that would both fit the older Aluminum Arcadia sliding glass door and look good at the same time?

Thanks, Lynn
