Hi, can anyone tell me the distance from the floor to the counter top on the island? In other words, from the floor to the top of the cooktop.
Thanks.
It depends...do you want the original height? Counter height is approx 35" .... where as a Bar height is approx 40".
our island height is about 30 inches -- same as table height, whereas the normal counters by the sink are around 36". When remodeling we debated often about what to do with the low cooktop height (I wanted to raise it), but hubby won out and we kept it at the original level in the belief that the original architects may "know best" and have a reason for what they did.
Pastry chefs claim that the lower height is preferred for rolling dough and I concur, but I do find it a bit low for kneading bread. It took a bit of getting used to, but now I like having the cooktop at this level, as it is so easy to see what you are doing.

Last year we built a kitchen for a designer we have worked with over the years, and she introduced us to a great idea that might be applicable for your situation. We had a cooktop that sat in the middle of a run of cabinets. The main counter top stood 36" off the floor, but at the cooktop it was lowered so that the burners were 32" off the floor. It made sense because the standard working height for countertops 36", but for cooking, less seems to work better. Cooking with tall pots is really made easier at a lower height. You might look at what kind of cooking you do and what size pots and pans you have, then just look and see where your hands naturally fall when you stir and check food. That will tell you a lot. But in the end, we found that 32" was an ideal height for a cooktop, and 36" was an ideal height for standard counter tops.
