Old Carpet Musty Odor...be gone please

what is the most effective way of getting rid of that annoying musty smell (I think), short of replacing the carpet altogether. I did shampoo it , but it doesn't seem to get rid of it. Strangely enough when I put my nose on the carpet it doesn't smell bad at all, however I am convinced it comes from there.

thanks!

could it be the carpet pad? when we got our Eichler, the carpet didn't look so stained, but the pad was completely filled with dog pee. yum
There was quite a bit of odor, including a musty smell. Once carpet and pad were gone, no more odor. sorry can't help you more...

Natures way of decomposing anything organic back into basic fertilizer.

Anything you do will only slow it down...unless you get all of the spores or whatever the thing is that is decomposing it.

Shampooing, even steam cleaning, leaves moisture down "there" where the mold/bacteria/etc lives. Steam cleaning best if you can get the moisture out completely or fast enough for it to dry without the mold/bacteria going again.

The other things generally just mask with another smell more pleasent to us humans.

I had a similar problem in our hallway bathroom, which has carpet. This is probably not the best floor covering for a bathroom, but that's what it had when we bought it, and I'm not ready to replace it. The carpet is in good shape, but, just as you've described, there's a smell that's difficult to pinpoint.

I tried different products, including some enzyme stuff. Finally I found an enzyme product that has two important characteristics. First, it works. Second, it's inexpensive enough that you can soak the offending area so it gets into the backing. That's the only way to get rid of the odor.

It's called Kids 'N' Pets Stain & Odor Remover (Carpet cleaner, stain remover, odor remover, laundry pre-wash).

I got it at the Mountain View Wal-Mart, but the last time I was there they were out of stock. When I find more, I'll keep you posted.
