Shorten roof eaves?

Has anyone shortened their roof eaves? I've noticed that the 6' roof eaves are blocking a good chunk of light, and I am thinking whether it would be a good idea to shorten them to 3'-4' or to open some square/rectangular holes in them like some of those modern houses. I understand that I might be losing usable patio space during light rain, but I don't ever remember myself BBQing during rain.
If anyone on this forum has entertained this idea, would you please share your findings with me?
