Architect Richard Neutra’s Hailey House—Hollywood Hills timeless treasure for sale
Fridays on the Homefront
In and around the home's outdoor dining area are lush Australian tree ferns, Timber bamboo, and mature palms.

Of particular note is Neutra's design for the carport, which had to be designed to accommodate the steepness of the hillside lot. Neutra's solution was to make the carport an entrance feature with a projecting roof for shade.

Reviving every Philippine mahogany panel and redwood detail, while enhancing the glass balcony railings and refreshing the kitchen and baths, created a livability and warmth that radiates throughout.

Adaptable spaces with flexible walls and floor-to-ceiling glass open out to sweeping views that connect the indoors with the lush landscape. A sculptural Neutra-designed brick fireplace on a steel column warms the living room area, and a period-perfect curved television is built into a living room wall.

A wooden deck, part of the original design, extends the space outward, and one can still see the Eucalyptus trees that Neutra planted to obscure the Spanish-tiled roofs on the houses below.

The addition of central air conditioning, Miele appliances, and a wired sound system "balances mid-century character—from vintage built-ins to cinematic influences with modern sophistication," says Bini, "creating a space that is both inviting and elegant."

This Neutra home is as happy hosting guests as it is hosting quiet evenings where SoCal modernism at its best can be appreciated.

Adding to the beauty and drama of this property is the tropical landscaping designed by Studio John Sharp. Known for his tranquil, sustainability driven landscapes, Sharp's creative design scheme expanded a series of tropical outdoor spaces with varying elevations that practically melt into the surrounding terrain.

Architectural-style pottery is paired with sculptural botanical statements that define the front garden. Transitioning from the front of the property to the rear, visitors are immersed in lush Australian tree ferns, Timber bamboo, and mature palms that conjure Tahiti-like dream destinations.

"The gardens are just exquisite, they're up-lit, and at night they really come to life. It feels like you're in Bali," Bini says. "The light glows through the clerestory windows, and you see the lights inside, in various colors, ambers, reds…It's very beautiful."

Guests will enjoy dining al fresco warmed by a fire pit and Japanese soaking tub. Adding to the enjoyment is a mini outdoor theater. All designed to transform the terraces into flexible gathering spaces, with secluded corners for quiet reflection.

"This really is a special place," comments Bini. "This house is as original as they come."
