To get started on tour day, Rancho San Miguel tourgoers will receive a tote bag and a map of the homes. There are a number of eateries within walking distance—everything from breakfast to sandwiches, and pizza to Mexican food.

"I think the upcoming tour is gonna be a great one," says Turetzky, who purchased his Eichler home with wife Patty in 1997. "We've got a new homeowners board, all young Eichler owners who are big mid-century modern enthusiasts."

"With all the families and kids here," he adds, "everybody is so inspired by what the neighbors are doing with their homes…Everybody wants to see what's happening."

General admission is $30, and $20 for RSMA members. Tourgoers will meet at the Rancho San Miguel Swim Club at 9:30am, and doors of tour homes will stay open until 2pm.

Next up is the Sacramento tour, set for Sunday, September 21, from 10am to 4pm. For this event, Preservation Sacramento presents their '49th Annual Historic Home Tour.' This time, the tour centers around five mid-century modern homes, four of which are Eichlers in South Land Park Hills, along with an ever-popular street fair and classic car show.

"This is the annual event we hold as our principal fundraiser—and it's the first time we've had a mid-century modern focus," explains William Burg, President of Preservation Sacramento, who's an historian and author of seven books about the city's history.

"South Land Park Hills was listed in the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources, both for its striking modernist architecture and the equitable philosophy of its developer," he adds. Designed by Jones & Emmons, the 1955-'56 subdivision represents Sacramento's one and only Eichler neighborhood.

This self-guided tour is revving up to be a popular one, and Burg expects a very responsive attendance. Guests will receive a map to the houses with a wristband, and can head out to tour in any order they like. Docents will be stationed at each house.

To add to the excitement, classic cars from the 1950s and '60s will be parked in driveways or in front of homes on the tour. One particular car of note, says Burg, is "Eva Bombal, a 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S belonging to local impresario Matías Bombal. It's an immaculate car, a well-known vehicle, and we're very proud to have her here."

In the heart of the tour area will be a street fair, providing live music, fun, and food trucks. There, visitors will discover community organizations, museums, nonprofits, and artisans.

Tickets for Preservation Sacramento's 'Historic Home Tour' run $30 per person for members, and $40 for the general public. To purchase advance tickets online, click here.
