Dad's Eichler in Orange: renovated except for the closet doors; two handymen have bailed on me; I have the fabric, but who do I call? I live in Northern CA but have a trip planned after Easter.

Could you describe the style of closet door? They vary from tract to tract (era to era). And, are you simply recovering the insert or having to refinish the frame as well?

If it is wood frame with wood insert ("masonite" hardboard), you can probably do it yourself. The original inserts were covered in grasscloth, stained mahogany, or zolantoned. On ours, we popped off the panel from the back (it was simply stapled on), had a new one cut at a local lumberyard, then refinished the insert (in our case, painted) and stapled it back into the frame.

Not sure how the metal frame ones are put together.

You can also try posting your question to the Cyber-Cafe of the Southern California Eichler website at:

Good luck.
