It's great to see the sun shining and spring flowers popping up everywhere, thanks to all the rain that California has been experiencing.
But the effects of winter storms, torrential rains, and knock-out winds surely run a lot deeper than those lovely tulips out back.
"I've been living in the Bay Area all my life," says Eichler Network director Marty Arbunich, "but I can't recall ever experiencing a winter as wet and scary as in 2023."
Dura-Foam Roofing & Solar Center and their Peninsula-based foam roofing staff were on the receiving end of the phones during those storms, and it wasn't pretty.

"The kinds of issues Eichler owners were experiencing—leaks, house and other water damage, ponding—weren't any different, but the number of damaged homes were dramatically different—especially when those windstorms hit," says Adam Feriante, former head of Dura-Foam.
"Three roofs in the same morning [in our area] had trees fall on them—that is impact," he adds. "Trees that seem healthy, with large root balls—the winds come up, and they fall over. We haven't seen winds like this in some time."
Which leads us to the new spring '23 issue of CA-Modern magazine, which contains a roofing feature you won't want to miss—'Lost in the Dark No More.'
|
The in-depth article turns our spotlight on a timely topic—roofing replacement systems and installers—that is especially pertinent following one of the heaviest rainy seasons on record. The article doubles as a how-to-guide to addressing roofing issues—"a cut-to-the-chase strategy for easing stress and getting you and your home covered," as our story points out.
For that feature, "we try to separate homeowners from the possible maze of [roofing research] information they've uncovered, at least for the time being," explains Arbunich, who has developed a helpful series of questions based on roofing inquiries received at the Eichler Network office over the years.
|
"That can be done," he says, "by focusing initially only on the roofing system, or systems, that are a match for each homeowner's present situation, needs, and budget."
Examining flat-roof systems for Eichler and Streng homes, 'Lost in the Dark No More' organizes them into three basic categories: spray-on polyurethane foam, single-ply thermoplastic membranes, and built-up systems.
To assist, a number of vetted experts were brought in to discuss pros and cons of the three roofing systems, and fill readers in on the latest requirements and technologies.
