exterior paint color

I am having a difficult time deciding upon a color for our house exterior and I was wondering if anyone could offer a word of advice?
Our house is located in a section of Sunnyvale which still seems to honor the "modern" concept of Eichler. The problem is, our previous homeowner re-roofed our roof with a red tile roofing material, rounded like house tiles that you'd find on a southwestern styled house. The house color chosen by this previous owner is brick red, same color as the roof. She left the beams and trim black. All in all, I like the black beams and trim because they seem to show the architecture of the house. What I'm having trouble with is the house being the same color as the roof. I want a "modern" look but don't know how to do it with a red-tiled roof. Any suggestions?

Hello there,

I may be way off base in responding to answer your question but here goes.

I've been struggling with my own Eichler cross to bear, as in "What flooring should I use?" For ideas I looked at "Design for Living Eichler Homes" book by Ditto et al. In that book on page 58 & 59 I saw a really interesting interior design for an Eichler. The owner had white walls, black beams, and red/ orangy spanish flooring tiles that gave the house a wonderful southwestern look.

Good luck!

You're pretty limited with a red roof. The obvious answer is re-roof.

If you don't want to go that far, I suggest going to Sherwin Williams and picking up their "Suburban Modern" exterior color preservation palette or picking up a sheet of Cabot stain colors. You may get lucky and find something that works. Sherwin Williams' sycamore tan might work.
