Fireplace and chimney - originally painted?

Hi all --

We have been mulling over the idea of removing whitewash paint that has been on our fireplace and chimney in our Eichler (built in '64, in Orange), and have been exploring sandblasting, paint stripping, and concrete overlay possibilities. Through the process, we discovered an initial coat of green paint on the block (and underneath the white paint) that exactly matches the original green Cabot stain that was used on the original siding. It's possible that the block was painted green at a later date by previous homeowners -- but I'm wondering if it wasn't part of the original color scheme.

Does anyone have an Eichler with an untouched fireplace/chimney that was originally painted -- accent color or otherwise? Is it possible that this was done in later (early 60's) models?

Thanks to this forum, there are some excellent threads re: paint removal strategies. But I haven't located any info. suggesting that Eichler fireplaces/chimneys may have originally been painted.

Thanks!

tnaturner, it's possible your fireplace was painted. While the vast majority were not, there were examples of some painted. you might check around your neighborhood. neighbors love to talk about their homes

Hi Joe --

Thanks for corroborating and the advice. Most of the fireplaces in our immediate area are red brick -- and our neighbors (and previous owners) haven't painted them.

But I think you're right re: examples of originally painted fireplaces. I've seen two homes in different tracts -- in near-mint condition -- with dark gray painted 7x7" block. An example of one of the homes can be seen here.

Thanks again,
