7 years ago I had automatic garage door openers installed on my original sliding doors. They have worked fine but last year I had to replace the roller hardware on one door. This year I need to replace the other one but the garage door company I used to install the sliders say they need to replace the tracl also- they won't just door the roller hardware. Their justification is that eventually they need to replace the track and it's too much work to come and just do the pieces. This would cost just over $1000.
I got a second opinion from A-1 sliding door today who quoted me to fix the rollers only. The cost is much more reasonable of course. They said the tracl never really goes bad. It seems to make sense. Can anybody explain why a tracl would "go bad"? Would they warp? It's appears to be a pretty heavy duty piece of metal. Any recommendations for A-1 would also be appreciated (they are an advertiser on this site).
Oops, let's try that again...
Could it be that the "replace it all" contractor doesn't know where he can get new rollers? He may be suggesting that because he thinks searching for new rollers will be fruitless, or that it's not worth his time to search for parts. Buying a whole new set will be much easier for him.
Personally, I can't imagine the track ever going bad unless someone really abused them, and I'd guess that replacing the rollers will be tons less work than replacing the track and rollers.
