We're brand new owners of an atrium Eichler in San Jose (Willow Glen). I notice that many of my new neighbors have come up with various decorative ways to prevent easy access to the atrium by, let us say, uninvited persons with the energy to simply crawl over the top of the front door. We've decided that clear glass over the door is the esthetic way top go. Thoughts, anyone?

Also, back channeled glazier recommendations would be most appreciated! (We've a repair issue, as well.) [email protected]

Hi, Gordon.

Congratulations on your new home! Welcome to the Eichler community and to the Fairglen neighborhood :-) Don't know if we've met yet, but I also live in an atrium model in your neighborhood.

Yes, there are a number of options to secure the open space over the glass panels at the atrium entry. Like you, I'm planning on putting something in there but it hasn't made it to the the top of my still rather long to-do list. Maybe this summer.

I don't think I'd go with the clear glass in my case. For one thing, I have enough trouble keeping the acres of floor-to-ceiling glass in the atrium clean. I don't want to add to it. (I guess you could go with obscure glass, though, if you were inclined. ) In addition, the orientation of my home means the cooling breezes we welcome during the occasional hot spell come in through the front and I worry that a solid wall in that space would block them.

I have the idea to do a mondrian design, probably out of wood, but ideally out of metal, in that space. That way I can get the security without hampering the airflow. Just a thought and not a very well developed one as yet.

Are you on one of the main streets or in a court? Perhaps we will run into each other in the near future.

Cheers.
Jake

Thanks to those who replied. (Love to hear from anybody who didn't use glass over the door and went with something else and likes it.)

Looking forward to meeting you, Jake. We're that property on Booksin. Stop by if you see cars in the driveway. We haven't moved in yet because we're installing flooring first.
