help with noise from the roof

We remodeled out Eichler about 10years ago. We addded R23 insulation (insulation bars with plywood backing) on the room.
WE are hving noise issue. the roof cracks or rumbels when there is large change in temperature.
What can be done to get rid of the noise and still keep R23 insulation.
Any help will be appreciated.
