Installing VCT over Particle Board?

Does anyone have any experience with installing VCT over particle board? We're remodeling our house, new floors, kitchen and bathroom, and we're trying to do it on a budget. Initially we heard that we could install the VCT over the original partical board as long as it's clean, but we've also heard otherwise. Has anyone here done this with success?

Our house originally had wall to wall nast pink and white carpet. We're going with a black speckled Armstrong VCT and have already installed it on the concrete slab downstairs, it looks really nice. We're also using this new adhesive that's not widely distributed yet but it's a spray on adhesive that seems to work really well.

Also, anyone looking for glass tile we found this great place that has amazing glass tile at really good prices. They have standard blends and you can also customize your own as well. They also have an 8 foot gradient blend that's pretty awesome.

Hi Reedwood,

I'm curious about the reference to a particle subfloor--are you in an Eichler? If so, is there a reason you aren't going all the way down to slab? If not an Eichler (no poured slab), I would probably check with the tile manufacturer as to acceptable/recommended glues and substrates. If I recall, Armstrong's VCT tile comes with such information or you could contact them from their website.

We are also considering new flooring in our eichler home on a budget and we are considering VCT. Do you have pictures of your VCT floor (send to JIONG CHEN AT YAHOO DOT COM if you'd like)? Can you share the cost, including material and installation?

hey jake, we are not in an eichler but have an affinity for them and use this forum as a resource for our remodeling. i forgot that eichler's usually don't have particle board subfloors but maybe someone on the board has had experience installing VCT on particle board in another home? i'll try contacting Armstrong as well but I thought if someone had a personal experience it would be better.

Jiong, we're not finished installing it yet but I could send you a picture after we're done. You could also look at this site where they show a palm springs home that had VCT installed:

We installed VCT's in our Eichler. We are very happy with the results. Our installer removed the VAT's (following correct procedure and disposal). As i understand it - he coated the floor and repaired cracks in our slab before he installed the new flooring. The only down side to it all is that no installer i got quotes from would seal or wax the tile. We are doing that this weekend.

You can see pictures in our blog: http://www.bradlaner.com/eichlerblog.html

I have a lot more pictures to post on our progress but haven't had the time. So much to do... I am dying to move in.

Tolemia: nice blog. thanks for sharing. It will be a regular stop for me. Be sure to let the folks at Lotta Living http://www.lottaliving.com/bb know about your blog. It will help many non-eichler mcm home owners.

reedwood: consult the Armstrong web site for specifications regarding application on different surfaces. You could probably get a better answer by calling them.

I will have 1240 sqft of Armstrong VCT installed this Spring. I am going with Classic Black from the Imperial Texture line, which matches my original asphalt tiles. Unfortunately, they are damaged beyond repair. I'll be doing the demo. Installation, product, and buffing has been quoted about $2100 for the whole house (slab).
