Thank you, Thom M., for your detailed reply to my question. As it turned out, I'm quite embarrassed (but grateful) to say, it appears that the element had simply become loose and was not fully connected. The Sears repairman reconnected it, and the oven is in full operation again.

I certainly appreciate having access to this resource online during my experience. Happy holidays to all.
