Cracking noise

We have an Eichler that has 4"ridgid foam with 1/2" wood fiber over it. The roof is a tar and gravel. The home makes a large cracking sound about 9:00pm and a simular but less noise in the morning. Do you have any idea what is wrong?

I have a similar situation and believe it is caused by variations of outside temperature expanding and contracting the roof materials.

Just curious, where in Martinez is your Eichler?

acording to the city inpector of Sunnyvale its small seismic activity

At first, I thought the comment about seismic activity was terribly funny. But, after a few days of reflection, I find that I agree with the City Inspector. Here's how it happens. A roof structure absorbs heat during the day and gets a little bigger as it gets hotter. Many wood to wood connections slip a little under pressure from the increased size of the ceiling boards. In the evening, the roof structure cools and tries to move to it's original size. Tight wood joints are then under a pulling force...and when one joint moves, others are likely to move at nearly the same time, since they would then have an increased momentary force on them. This is the disturbing cracking noise many Eichler owners hear late in the day.
Our Customers say that the only way to fix this is to put the best insulator available today...a layer of closed-cell foam roof...over the outside of the structure. This prevents the passage of heat and cold into and through the roof structure, eliminating the movement, and the resulting seismic activity of your roof structure.
