How deep are the radiant pipes?

I have a 1967 Eichler Home in Concord. After doing a search on this forum and looking several pages to no avail I figured it would make sense for me to ask this question. How deep are the radiant pipes in the concrete slab? Sorry if this is redundant.

Someone told me the pipes are 4 inches under the concrete slab. Can anyone else confirm that? Thanks.

We live in a 1962 Eichler in Sunnyvale. I have been told (many a times in the last few weeks by Eichler specialist GCs) that the pipes start an inch to an inch and a half below the slab. It might be different in your case considering it's a 1967 Eichler.

I think the pipe depth can vary even within your own home.

While getting ready to have our floors refinished (Polished Concrete) I found some pipes visible on the surface.

Even the neighbors found out the hard way, when they had carpet installed in the bedroom the carpet tack in a corner of the room punctured a pipe.

The lesson I learned is, I don't think there is a set pipe depth for the radiant. They may have planned a depth of 4" but when installed there may be areas which actually touch the surface.

I recently had to trend a path between the wall to the center island and did run into 2 radiant heat pipes along the way. It was only 1" or less from the surface of the floor.

Look at the wet spot near the top of the page. We only had to dig 1" deep to
run a conduit for electrical and hit 2 pipes.

I hope this helps. I have a 1958 Eichler I think.
