Painting and staining

Hello,

I had a quick question on paints and stains.

We're currently planning on restoring our Eichler to its original lustre.
This involves the front door (currenly far too ornate) and putting lauan
panels up on several walls.

Was there a particular stain color and varnish Eichler used on his wall
panels to get the right color?

Also, we're painting the new door a "classic" Eichler red. Any suggestions
on a red that comes closest to the originals?

Any guidance on this would be great!

Thanks,

Frank

There are a ton of prior posts as well as Eichler Network Articles on paneling restoration and paint colors.

Use the "search" function on the Chatterbox Lounge index...

Good luck.

Yes, there are a lot of previous posts on both painting and staining so the recommendation to search those first is a good one.

You don't mention what the exterior color palette is you are working with--I don't actually recall seeing "classic Eichler red". Where are you located?

Can you say if you are simply choosing a Eichler-compatible palette (earth tones with accent color) or looking for your house's original palette.

I think it's fair to say that, in general, the original Eichler palettes tended to be warm (brown based) or cool (gray based) as evidenced by interior cabinets/closet doors/tile.

Thanks for the replies. I'll snoop around the site a bit more.

In regards to the house color, it's beige with vinyl paneling.

Thanks,

Frank,

Here's the link to the article on this website regarding paneling.

http://www.eichlernetwork.com/spot_paneling.html

The article discusses various options for refinishing, buying new etc...

Again, if you search on 'paint' you'll find a bunch of discussions on paint schemes and colors.

I can only assume you were asking about 'red' front doors that people like to restore/paint as an iconic Eichler feature. In the end it's a matter of taste.

You can even look at the ad for Loni Nagwani at the top of the page - the orange color there is like a color you've probably seen on some front doors.

California Paints at the corner of El Camino and Murphy in SV has some index cards on which they've got examples of 'Eichler' paints. What they are is colors they've mixed over the years for Eichler owners who are trying to recreate 'original' colors.

Enjoy.
