Renovating shower

Hi all,

We live in a 1960 E-111 in Castro Valley. Our shower tile is in bad shape, so we're considering renovating it, and we're going for an original look. The shower floor currently has 1"x1" blue ceramic tiles in 3 or 4 shades. The walls are 3"x3" blue tiles. The walls look newer than the floor; I assume the floor tiles are original. Can anybody confirm? Does anybody know where this 1" tile or a reasonable facsimilie can be sourced?

One more thing: Our tile guy suggests doing a mud floor and walls. This means the tile will stand off from the walls about 1.25" and I think that might not fit with the modern aesthetic. Has anybody done this? I understand mudding is a superior method for tiling, especially in showers, but I don't want it to look inappropriate.

Thanks!

Dan

Just about any tile store carries Daltile and should be able to order this for you.

Thanks for the link. That pattern's color variation is much greater than what we currently have. I'm sure it would look fine, but I'd like to get a little closer to original (if what we have is original).

Daltile also has this glass tile:

And it's about three times more expensive, but the color variation is closer to what we have now. I'm still not certain the 1" blue tiles we have are original, however. Anybody?

I have seen what were were supposed to be original Eichler shower stalls with the 1" tile so if the question is the tile size, I'd say it could easily be original. If you are talking specifically about the color, then I couldn't say for sure.

We still have our original tiled shower.

Yes, its on mud, and it does sit out about an inch.

The tile in ours is 4x6, I guess it varies.

You don't say where you are. However, a store here in San Jose area
specializes in carrying old tiles. I used them for my previous (non EIchler) house to match 50 yr. old tiles. Bullnose tile is near Zanker and Brokaw.
