In mid-October, the Turetzkys will hop in their car and drive to the San Francisco Peninsula to tour—what else?—more Eichlers. "That's when Patty and I will be going to check out the San Mateo Highlands tour," Gerald says. "It's all about living the California lifestyle, right?"

Meanwhile, over at the Highlands, Joe Eichler's largest subdivision, 'Eichler Home Tour' organizer Jim Palmer is pulling out all the stops to present the Highlands' fifth official home tour. With 650 Eichler homes in this tract, there were certainly quite a few to choose from. A select dozen of them will be featured on tour weekend.

"We are super excited for the 'Eichler Home Tour,' which has been a year in the making," Palmer says. (Click here to read our detailed preview of the 2023 San Mateo Highlands tour.)

The ambitious weekend event takes place on October 14 and 15, from 10am to 4pm each day. After meeting at the Highlands Recreation Center, guests will set out for a day of viewing everything from whole-house restorations to kitchen remodels, landscaping projects, and pool additions.

"We've got 12 amazing homes to showcase," says Palmer—"examples of budget-friendly renovations, throw-the-budget-out-the-window spectacular remodels, and everything in between."

Tourgoers, he adds, can also count on "plenty of floor-to-ceiling glass, mahogany paneling, atriums, and a few surprises, like terrazzo flooring, fire pits, swimming pools," to say nothing of the beautiful scenic views that the Highlands is known for.

"It's all for a good cause," Palmer says, noting that "100 percent of the weekend's net proceeds go to benefit our local Highlands Elementary School PTA."

This year, Heath Ceramics is among the new tour sponsors; and author/interior designer Karen Nepacena, who lives in an East Bay Eichler, will be signing copies of her recently published book, Midcentury Modern Style. To make lunchtime convenient and worry-free, tourgoers will find food trucks on site at the school.

Custom merchandise will also be on hand. Tour posters are being offered in eight different colors, and T-shirts in three styles and four colors, all designed by home tour team creative director Tiffany Chin.

"The best part of the tour is it really brings the community together," Palmer says. "By community, I mean both the residents of our special little neighborhood, and the tour attendees who come from near and far to join together and celebrate our shared love of mid-century modern style, and everything Eichler. It's just such a positive and fun event for everyone involved."
