Door Bell Wiring

My door bell has stopped working. The transformer, which is in the utility closet in the rear of the house is OK. There are two 4-conductor flat wires around the door bell chime and the door bell button.
The door bell button is wired to the outer pair on wire A, and the electric door strike was wired on the other. Removing the door bell chime in the kitchen, I found what I assume are those two wires. The solenoid for the chime is wired across the 4th (or 1st depending how you look at it) conductor of each wire. This makes sense if the transfomer is across the outer pair of the second wire (not connected to the door bell).
However, I don't have the 18vac across any of the wire pairs, so I assume there's a break between the transformer and the rest of the wiring. Anyone familiar enough with the wiring to know where it runs? The wires from the transformer runs into the wall also immediately so that isn't much help.

My original wiring goes into the garage.

Thanks. I found through more testing and opening a hole in the ultility closet, that there are 2 four conductor wires in the utility closet. One runs to the garage by the front door, and the other runs to the door chime. There is also another pair of wires in the utlility closet, but I don't know where they run.
It seems as though the outer pair of wires have broken, so I was able to rewire it to the inner pair, and get the door bell working.

I'll try and do a sketch then post it for future reference.
