front door lock replacement

The lock on our front door broke yesterday. More specifically, the core/thingy that fits inside the knob broke. We had been having some issues with it but now it is done. The key barely inserts and when it does, won't turn.

We have the original sargeant knobs/handles and the locksmith said the core/part that fits in these aren't standard and needs to be special ordered. He said he has replaced these in our neigborhood before and this is always the issue on Eichler homes with the original knobs/handles.

I really wasn't surprised to hear him say that because we have never been able to call anyone for anything with this house and just have it fixed really quickly. But, I still wanted to check in and see if anyone else has run into this or see if anyone thinks it doesn't sound right. If it does sound odd, I would be happy to take any locksmith recommendations for the SM Highlands area. Email me...the address is in my profile. The sooner the better since I can't unlock my front door!

Thanks!

Sorry I don't have a locksmith suggestion for you, but I thought I'd utilize this post that you started to see if anyone has any suggestions for a locksmith in the Palo Alto area. We're moving into a new Eichler and will need to have the locks replaced. I'm already getting nervous (but excited at the same time). We're new to the area. Send recommendations directly to: cheree68 AT yahoo.com

Hope the original poster found a locksmith!

Thanks!!

if you can't get it repaired the "Defiant" brand locks from the Home Depot are THE Closest replacement to the original
