Front door question

hi
We're in a Greenmeadow Eichler, Palo Alto, courtyard model.
The front door is original. Flat panel, hollow core. It is painted an 'authentic' Eichler color..

We'd like to replace it with a solid core door. The hollow core isn't very secure and we've already had one exterior door demolished by the dogs.

I can
-go with flat panel, primed, and paint it. Probably cheapest, made of some engineered product.
-go with flat panel, birch or mahogony, and stain it.
-go with a door with some 'dimension', if I can find something modernistic.

I know it will end up being cut to fit at Mintons ...so exact size won't be the determining factor.

I have looked at alot of Eichlers in our area and find a variety of doors, depending on age of home and model. Most seem to have wood, stained, raised panel doors. Some are original, some are replacements.

Advise on the best aesthetic appreciated.

My suggestion is to go with a flat, "slab" door and paint it in a fun, colorful hue. I think that the color announces "entrance" in an otherwise bland facade.

I am not in favor of a stained door because it would not stand out enough and would not signal "entry".

I don't think that raised panel doors are appropriate. They are too ornate for the clean lines of an Eichler.

Of course, YMMV.

Good luck with your project, let us know what you decide.
