Garage door for a one car garage

I'm a brand new Eichler owner so I have lots of questions (thanks in advance!). Would anyone have any suggestions for a door for my one car garage (other half converted a long time ago)? Because of the beam overhead, I prefer not doing the roll up. Do people do double doors that open out? Does it make sense to do a custom door (with the same Eichler vertical line look)?

Since no one else has responded yet, let me ask a few questions:

- what tract are you located in or what era is your house

- assuming you currently have a garage door in place, what kind is it (slab?)

- what is it about the current garage door you don't like

- when you say you "don't want a rollup because of the beam" can you elaborate? Is it a mechanical concern or an aesthetic concern?

A contractor told the owner of a home I leased that he couldn't replace the current malfunctioning door because the clearance was too low. Of course, that just meant you needed a system designed for low clearance which I found and had installed.

On my Willow Glen Eichler, I had the hardware replaced and an automatic opener added to my original 1960 Eichler single-garage slab garage door and it works fine. So that's possible too (and relatively cheap). Others have had panelling installed on rollup doors--can be expensive but most find the result aesthetically satisfactory.

Once we have more of an idea of your garage's particular issues, I'm sure people on the board will be more than happy to offer their experience and opinions.

Cheers.
Jake
