The previous owners had already covered the atrium and it has 2 working skylights for great ventilation. It is a well-used room, but is essentially empty with cabinets built on one side, and a wall-length bar that is handy for pot lucks, buffets and stacking newly-arrived goods in the home.
I would like to redecorate it for max smart usage. Our kids are getting older (8 & 11), and my husband and I each have an office, thanks to this awesome floorplan. I would like to convert the atrium into some sort of kids office/landing zone for all their comings and goings. One thought: a wall-length desk unit they could share, with computers housed there (wireless networking) and storage for books, etc. Anyone done this type of thing? We have 3 walls that are sliders/glass, so one long wall would be for the built in. Maybe it's time to consult a professional designer with eichler experience? Anyone have any experience with those who advertise here? We are in Foster City.
thanks!
why suffer because the previous owner closed in the atrium ?
Take the lid off the atrium. In addition to looking better, it would probably increase the value of your home.
last weekend, there happened to be three atrium-model open houses all within a half mile of us, so we went lookie-loo'ing.
All three had covered atriums. One was open air with a lattice over it, one had open-able celestory windows around the perimeter of the cover/roof, and one was completely enclosed with ample skylighting.
I have to say that even tho I wouldnt cover my atrium, I really dug the three atriums i saw. They were different from the original intention, but all three were well done, and I could see how they changed -not detracted from- the usefulness of the space in different ways.
It sounds like you are getting some good use with that atrium, and simply want to make it even more useful. Depending on what kind of cash you want to blow, maybe some inexpensive IKEA furniture would allow you and the kids to experiment with different layouts and not feel like you have to stick with the first idea you try. I bet the kids would have a blast designing their 'own' space.
There are a ton of Custom Woodworking Craftsmen/women out there that could do a terrific built-in multi workstation along your wall.
We had one built 2 years ago in our family room that is 15feet long and is WONDERFUL.
I would do a local rearch and see what types of units these professionals have built and go for it.
Best of Luck
