We had the units installed last year, (in the middle of the heat wave). We just went thru our first winter and enjoyed the ability to control which rooms we heated.
You can look at the past post for more details of our installation

Hi Jeff,
tx for the link - nice installation!
we had our roof covered with Durafoam a year ago, so I am not sure I'd put the units on the roof. Was there any particular reason you didn't install them on the ground?

As you saw from the link posted to our earlier string from a few years ago, they are fantastic. Ours are Samsung.
After helping my elderly father with getting a system in stalled in his Los Altos Hills home recently (non-Eichler, but he only needed to do a couple of rooms), I wish we had done a Fujitsu. They are much more powerful - AND super quiet. Ours are quiet-ish, but nothing like his, which you cannot hear at all when they are on.
We used an advertiser on this site and he and his crew were wonderful, careful, and kind to my elderly father. I expected to have to micromanage the process, but ended up letting them do their thing and just showing up at the end for the "how to use" lessons.
Strongly recommend Fujitsu and getting the most powerful one w the most zones you think you might ever need. That way you can expand in the future. Also, get one that comes w a heat pump. (Some only come that way anway, but it's good for supplemental heating and adds only a few hundred to the cost of the non-heat pump variety.)
Our installer is in Los Gatos.

I live in Palo Alto, and am looking for a system for the whole house. I have received quotes from different installers for Fujitsu, Daikin, LG and Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi is the least expensive option. Any input on how the various brands compare. Any installers that I should stay away from?
Recommendations and critiques should be sent directly to the poster at gutbug AT yahoo.com
Sorry for such a long delay.
We could have installed the units on the ground however, we had the space available on the roof, so we placed them up there just to keep them out of site in the yard.
We looking into the different brands,
1. make sure they offer both cooling and heating
2. check out the remotes and see what options they have. For example sleep timer, program start ect.
Putting a condenser on a Dura-Foam roof is easy and won't hurt the roof. Wood supports go right on the foam and can be shimmed to level. Holes for electrical and the copper 'line set' are covered by a roof-jack that is caulked to the surface. The cone shaped jack is pressed into a big flat metal square of sheet metal. We like to trim the square into a round circle and make it only big enough to do the job before sticking it in a bed of caulk on the surface. Consider noise before installing on the roof. Noise from a humming motor may be hard to isolate if you install it over the wrong part of the house.

Cathye, now that you have lived with your Samsung/Fujitsu. What zones did you do? Where did you place your units? Wall? near floor? What have you learned? how do you feel? Would you do it again?
Feel free to contact me at siosigger(AT)yahoo (DOT)com on your thoughts and observations.
We are considering.
