Atrium floor question

I have removed the wood dividers between the concrete floors. They were old, peeling and ugly. Should I replace with new wood. Or do you think putting some pebbles in would be OK. How about some grass? My husband thinks that the concrete floor will shift if we don't replace with wood. What do you think.
