Check water system

We're about to put in a new heating system and do other remodeling on a 1956 Eichler on Edgewood in Palo Alto. We're wondering if there is any way to check the water system (kitchen, bathrooms). If it's good, there's no reason to do anything, but I'd hate for it to go out right after we lay new tile.
Is there any way to check the condition of our water pipes? Sewer pipes? Can anyone recommend anyone who can do this who you think does good work?
