Cliff May homes are quite popular in Southern California but they are forgotten homes out in Marin. There are 3 small areas of Cliff May homes in Novato. Does anyone know if there are any more in Northern California? Marin has some great MCM homes in the hills of San Rafael and in Strawberry Valley as well. If any go up for sale I will let you know on my website!

Hey Renee. There is a tract in Castro Valley. There may be some closer to Oakland as well. Cupertino is the first tract of about 1000 homes, built in '52, but the neighborhood is being plundered by redevelopment. Well documented, though. Eichler's own, Ernie Braun shot the cover for Sunset Magazine featuring the tract. There may be a small tract out towards Ladera, west of Palo Alto. I am sure there are more.

Beyond the Bay Area, there are Cliff Mays in Chico and Redding. I have discovered Cliff May homes in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Missouri, and Colorado. I am working on a map. Cliff May and co-designer, architect Chris Choate, sold 18,000 prefab kits to various builders.

Bay Area Builder, Stern & Price, built many in the Bay Area, but was subsequently sued by May when they decided to make there own house, which resembled Cliff May's design a little too closely. Stern & Price also built many Anshen+Allen homes too.

The home was the top selling house in California in '53 and was on the cover of at least 7 major magazines. I believe May quite making the tract homes in '56 because buyers desired larger homes, which meant more parts than one truck could carry.
