Electrical hotfoot...

Hi,

I just had a nasty surprise. I kneeled down on the floor to plug my laptop into the in-floor electrical outlet next to the fireplace and found the concrete for about a 9" radius around the outlet hot. Hot enough it was uncomfortable to leave your hand there.

I switched off the circuit the outlet is on as a precaution. (In my 1960 J&E atrium model, that circuit also carries the outlets for the livingroom, masterbedroom, and 2nd bedroom.) I guess I'll be calling the electrician tomorrow.

Has anyone else has run into this? If so, how did you identify/correct the problem?. Any advise/insights appreciated.

Jake:

Haven't had your experience, but we have had a contractor cut through a live electrical wire and the circuit breaker did NOT trip. The contractor was left holding a very burned looking wire.

I don't know if you have original electrical panels or if they have been replaced. It does sound like that you need to look at replacing your panel or at least replacing the breaker, because something is not doing its job.

We ended up replacing an electrical panel as the electrician said that the circuit breakers in our panel in our mid-60s Eichler were known for their failure to trip. We could not just replace the breakers as new breakers by a different manufacturer would not fit in the panel.

Good luck. Let us know how it all turns out.

Some times this type of short is seen by the protective device as another "heater" or some such.

High resistance and NOT a direct short (low resistance), so the fuse/circuit breaker/etc sees it as a device, not a short.

VERY dangerous this type of short. Pull the fuse or turn off that breaker ****NOW**** and have it checked.

Also could be the circuit breaker going/gone bad.

Fuses and circuit breakers do ***WEAR OUT***. Why I'll never reuse old sockets/switches/etc either.
