Replacing windows

I'm taking the opportunity of repainting my Eichler to replace the windows across the back of the house--six sliders 31" wide by 37.25" high. I'm told replacing windows in Eichlers is a pain, as the walls are so thin. Any suggestions on types of windows to use? To avoid?

I'm also told there might be a code question, as the windows are more than 41" off the interior floor. How much trouble is it to expand the window opening a foot or so to accomodate this?

Finally, my siding is the crenellated-type--1.5" wood interspersed with 3/8" indents, about a quarter inch deep. Some of this needs to be replaced--does anyone know where I can find this type of siding?

Thanks,

You shouldn't have a code problem if all you're doing is replacing what's already there. You run into problems when you remodel and make changes to your existing structure.

It also shouldn't be a problem to find a replacement window. I've replaced sliding windows in both of the Eichlers I've owned with Milguard low profile aluminum sliders that are quite affordable. Other manufacturers have similiar products. I recommend using someone with experience with Eichlers. They can make sure to order windows with the right footprint to fit your existing opening. There are multiple choices regarding types of flashing, etc. Where are you located?

If these are bedrooms, I recommend getting a window with a thermal break if possible. It's not necessary, but it helps cut down on condensation in the winter.
